Kudo's to United Way - For recognizing the importance of geriatric massage to our elderly citizens. United Way has provided a grant to two of Charlotte's adult day care centers for the participants to experience the benefits of therapeutic geriatric massage. Many had never had a massage and were pleasantly surprised at the benefits of this - reduction of pain, improved mobility, improved circulation, relief of stress - to name a few. Many of the participants had history of strokes and suffered from paralysis on one side. After regular sessions twice a week for 10 weeks, they were amazed that, not only was the pain reduced but that some of the paralysis was eliminated. The sessions last 1/2 hour and, at the end of the session, gentle passive exercises are done on the effected areas. Those participants are sold on the benefits of therapeutic massage and are anxious to have this be a regular part of the adult day care routine of the bi-weekly activity. Personally, I have noticed that during the time that they have received massage and that the participants have visited their doctors, they have required less pain medicine and less blood pressure medicine. I am so proud to be a part of Charlotte's progressive alternative care for those of our society that especially need this specialty. |
