Media Reviews (page 4)
Let me just start this review with "Mega 5 Stars"! This is an outstanding volume, both as a text book and as a practical guide. Its layout is pleasing to the eye and very readable. The enclosed CD's, for both PC and Mac, are a joy to interact with. How cool is it to have a full-color, visual movie depicting numerous muscle movements that accompany all sorts of regular events, like walking and standing up from a sitting position! It makes anatomy reachable, and, well, fun. I showed a few of the animations to my wife, who's also a massage therapist, and she said, "Wow!" Also amongst my favorite aspects of this book: inserts in each chapter about key figures in the development of massage, not just Per Ling, either. There's sections featuring Paul St. John, Ashley Montagu, Janet Travell, Bonnie Pruden, and more; clever humanistic quotes at the start of each chapter ("One cannot step twice into the same river"); self-tests after each section, beautiful photographs and illustrations. Do I sound like I'm gushing? I am. This is a great book! I imagine it would be demanding for a massage student in school, but for me, it's a cornocopia of awesome information in an intelligent, user-friendly format. Hats off to Susan Salvo! |

This is a home study course based on many onsite workshops presented by this team through MUSC. It consists of 4 DVD’s covering topics: On each section, the presenter identifies their qualifications and employment. The goals for each session are clearly stated, and are fulfilled in an orderly manner. These very experienced presenters use photographs, clear descriptions, real life demonstrations, power point, study questions, research references to take the learner step by step through an in depth training in how to assess a client’s feet and nails, how to take a thorough history related to a person’s meds, feet, their shoes, their activity and lifestyle. Methods are used to help determine a client’s capabilities in selfcare with their feet and nails, and literacy so patient education is given in an effective manner. The presenter take a real life history, does a demonstration of nail debridement, gives guidance about products, contraindications, cautionary notes in giving foot care, cold sterilization of equipment. It is very thorough! The assessment tools used include a Doppler to listen to pedal pulses, and skin temperature assessments. Measurement of the brachial pulse and ankle pulses, and a way of figuring a ratio of this data helps indicate possible problems in blood flow to the extremities. This is demonstrated clearly. There is dialogue between two presenters about their experiences in their Foot Care Clinic as Advanced Practice Nurses that reinforces the history taking process, assessment, procedures, documentation, referral to other medical services, how to charge for services, where to obtain equipment, cold sterilization, proper footwear, various common foot problems and vascular conditions, and edema. Each section is concluded with study questions, research articles recommended, and contact information to the MUSC. Each one of us in a therapeutic practice where we can observe and assess our client’s feet and legs would greatly benefit from this information. |
