Carol Sanks, NANMT's 5th President, died on August 18, 1999 at the University of North Carolina--Chapell Hill Medical Center, following a head-on collision with a drunk motorist a few nights before. We will miss her dearly. She was a good friend and a fine leader.

We'll miss you, Carol!

A Tribute To Carol Sanks from Theresa Harrison

I have some thoughts to say about Carol and for her passing. First of all I know that Carol would be unreceptive to alot of tears and sobbing on her behalf. She really abhorred negative "boo hooing" energy, and struggled to keep herself focused on creativity. She is now probably seeking out her idols such as Ghandi and Confuscius and Buddah.

She was 5'2'' and had short black hair and dark brown eyes. Purple was her favorite color, which surprises me because of her fire.

Of all of Carol's traits, the thing that most sums up her philosophy for me is: "Cut the crap and move on." Do not ask Carol to further dependent, negative behaviors. That includes indecisiveness. Not that she was impulsive or reckless, but she was brilliant and could rapidly process information and arrive at conclusions using all her resources.

She loved music and played guitar and harmonica. Look for her in the center of a campfire sing-along or in a meditative healing circle or a fellowship drumming circle. And she loved body work. She worked as a structural integrationist, as well as a Nurse Massage Therapist. She had great vision for nurses as healers and professionals, already credentialled in client care and as such she very much wanted nurses to move beyond subordinance.

A Tribute to Carol Sanks
from Sandy Troth

She rose to some prominence in the community through her educational program development, weekly television show and service in the Mental Health Assoc. of Durham and the Community Holistic Health Center as well as her interim Presidency of NANMT.

I loved Carol's child-like vulnerability best of all. My fondest memory of Carol is of her dancing like no one was looking! She was a midwestern girl who had the courage to stll love potato chips and coca cola and fried balogna sandwiches with yellow mustard even though it wasn't politically correct! She loved being out in nature, finding faces in the rocks and fairy rings in the woods. She loved just hanging out with her friends, maybe playing cards, maybe watching for shooting stars, maybe just being. She is the most unique individual I ever met. I will be telling "Carol" stories for the rest of my life.

Some Letters:

The entire AHNA community is saddened to hear of Carol's death. She was indeed a bright and shining light for nursing, massage, and holism, and we shall all miss her tremendously. It is difficult to understand why some people are taken from us before their time, but we must trust that all is in Divine Order. We send our deepest sympathy and our prayers for Carol's family and her community of friends and colleagues. We send our prayers too to all of the members of the NANMT Board. This is a difficult time, and we offer our support as you face this challenge.

Blessings,
Merla R. Hoffman, MSN, RN, CHTP/I, HNC President, American Holistic Nurses Association

It is with shock and profound sadness that I learned of Carol Sank's death from Sue Collins, past President of the AHNA. I have communicated with Carol about the nurse's role in massage for over five years and enjoyed our conversations immensely. I know that her transition will be felt by all who knew and loved her.

May Carol's passionate concern about nursing's role in caring for others and your wonderful memories of her comfort you, her family and friends in your grieving. I shall miss Carol's physical presence during our journey in this school room called Life as I affirm that her essence is eternal.

Love,
Bobbi Harris
Past President NANMT

I am so, so sorry about Carol's passing. My prayers are with her and all of you.
